Checking the books

My rather unscientific mode of tracking how my books are going no doubt leaves a lot to be desired. I get reports (and sometimes photographs) from family and friends who lurk in bookshops, turning the books cover out when the shop assistants aren't looking (they're a loyal bunch, and I guess the family has a material interest). Anyway, I heard two bookshop reports which pleased me very much this week.

I was totally delighted when I heard that my new collection of poems, Theatre, was in the front window of the Paperback Bookshop in Bourke St, Melbourne. Poems? In the window? Now that is cool, even if poetry is never going to pay the rent. And then I heard that The Singing was spotted in the Best Seller shelves at Borders. That must mean I can officially call myself a Best Selling Author. I've ordered the badge...

Life otherwise has been, to say the least, chaotic. I feel like I'm running like a loon just to stay in the same spot. Despite this, I really have started a new novel. It's a fantasy novel, but it's very different from the Pellinor books. Shorter, for a start. It's written in the first person, which I am enjoying, and it's set in a world and time very like ours. It's not quite what I expected I would be doing, which I take as a good sign, and I have no idea if those who like the Pellinor books would go for this one. But this character has taken hold and is demanding to be written. It's coming slowly but steadily. Writing is very mysterious sometimes...

That's awesome! I can't wait to see what the new book is on (though I have to wait for The Singing).

I hope your badge is shiny. ^_~

Congrats on becoming a Best Selling Author! :D

Awesome news! I can't wait for your new book. First person is always good: Robin Hobb can vouch for that. Her Farseer Trilogy is set in first person, and yet it does not detract from the overall story. Good luck with your writing! Hope to hear more soon :)

Bestseller!! I knew the Pellinor series would make it. I mean, how could it not?!
But, like everyone else, I am eagerly awaiting your new novel. I didn't realize how much I really loved fantasy until I read your books. So now I want more. Is your new novel YA or Adult or Undetermined? Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be awesome! Good luck!

I believe your Pellinor series is the best series I've ever read.
It's not fair The Singing doesn't come out until march... :( Thank you so much for these beautiful books!

I just finished reading THE RIDDLE and I love the series! I can't get THE CROW because all of our bookstores are closed due to Hurricane Ike. I will just have to be patient until life becomes a little more normal.
Thanks so much for sharing your talents!
I am eager to read the next two in the Pellinor Series and your brand new one you are working on now.
Take care!!

Heyy,

As everyone else has already said, congrats! It's really cool when you go onto Yahoo answers and people are asking questions about your books. Or when someone else ask for books suggestions and the Pellinor Series is on that list!!

I must admit I have ben slack. I've had The Singing for a couple of week now and still havent read it. I have this big pile of books on my desk that need reading. I feel like ditching all of those and going straight to yours.. But I can't.. But I'll get there soon.

As for your new book, diversity is a great thing. I think people will think even more of you if it is nothing like the Pellinor Series. It is great to have a successful series, but its even greater if you can then turn around, write something completly different, and make that successful.

Anyway, thats all for now,

Cheers

I love love love these books! I was beginning to lose my faith in modern books... until I picked up The Naming! I fell in love with the characters instantly, especially Maerad, who I relate with more than I can even describe! I completely devoured the first three books within a week, now I'm on my fourth time reading each of them and cannot wait another minute until The Singing is sent to my doorstep [(5 days :):):)]!

Thanks to you, Alison for making my brain burst with passion for yet another amazing series! (my last brain bursting passion was for Harry Potter, now I can finally have a new obsession!)

I adored the Singing, and I adore all of these books! I've been spreading the love to my friends here in America, and so far all of them have fallen in love. I've gotten Twilight fans to like the Singing! (No offense to any Twilight lovers here, it's just so hard to convince a lot of them that there are other good reads that don't concern Bella or Edward) It's quite fun!

Alison, I think that soon you'll be responsible for making the entire youth population literate and book lovers!

Thank you, lovely readers! And how nice to know that you're out there spreading the word. I'm very grateful. And also delighted.

We are more than happy to spread the word. :)

I just got my copy of The Singing and finished reading it. It was soo sad. I loved it. I love your entire series. It surpasses Harry Potter. And Twilight, by far. (No offense to those Twilight girl fans out there xD)

I miss Cadvan the most. I really, really look forward to whatever you're writing next.

Alison, I ordered the UK version of the book (and loved it), but I was wondering if the US version is any different as the rest of my collection are US versions. THANKS!

I have been reading consistantly since the first Harry Potter book came out years ago. I have read everything from Lord of the Rings to Twilight and I want you to know your books are so beautifully written that I have had a hard time reading anything else since. I am in love with the Pellinor series, yes even Edward has to take a backseat, I have read them each twice and would love to start all over again. I myself took a liking to the Winterking!!! Alison I wish I could communicate with you personally, but this message will have to do, please think about another series. I would love to read something else from you.

Thank you, thank you - it means a lot, I assure you, to hear from readers! I just don't have a lot (or any) time for proper correspondence - and even this poor blog has been neglected lately.

Life has been crazy!

Amy, the books are the same in the US, the UK and in Australia, although spellings are changed for the US. And by the time it gets there, most of the annoying tiny mistakes that creep through no matter how many times you read it have been picked up!
